Phyiscal therapy cost varies greatly across locations and service providers. In this article we will examine the cost of physical therapy services for three different patients. One patient has traditional Medicare part B insurance. The second patient has no health insurance. The third patient has Medicaid insurance.

At the end of this article I will share some tips to save money on physical therapy services after a total knee replacement.

How much does physical therapy cost with traditional Medicare Part B Health Insurance?

Medicare Part B is the Medicare plan that covers outpatient services. For more information on what Medicare Part B covers click here.

Outpatient physical therapy after total knee replacement:

Most patients will start outpatient physical therapy within the first 24 to 72 hours after total knee replacement surgery. To understand the physical therapy cost structure with Medicare part B it is important to understand typical Medicare coverage.

Medicare Part B has a $233 deductible in 2022. After the annual deductible has been met Medicare Part B covers 80% of the allowed amount. Many Medicare beneficiaries choose to purchase a Medicare Supplemental plan, also known as a Medigap policy. This policy may cover all or a portion of the Medicare Part B deductible.

Outpatient physical therapy in the home:

Medicare Part B coverage includes outpatient physical therapy services delivered in the home. This is not “home health” physical therapy.

If you would like to find physical therapists who deliver in-home services search:

How much does physical therapy cost without insurance?

Outpatient physical therapy after a total knee replacement:

At Total Therapy Solutions we realize that physical therapy after total knee replacement is often a requirement and not a luxury.

Some Medicare Advantage plans and other non-Medicare insurance plans may limit the number of physical therapy visits beneficiaries have per year.

If you have exhausted your insurance coverage for physical therapy services we offer a low monthly rate of $150/month for group therapy or $500/month for one on one therapy.

How much does physical therapy cost with Medicaid Insurance?

Medicaid is a state run insurance program and varies based on different state guidelines.

Most often there is no cost to the patient when the patient has Medicaid insurance coverage.
